Marisa Benjamim
Artista visual
Born in Santarém, Portugal in 1981. Lives and works in Berlin,
Marisa Benjamim’s practice is built on a complex set of relationships between nature, nutrition and the meticulous documentation of ingredients, processes and movement. Through this she focuses on the ubiquity of flowers and herbs as images and symbols in human societies throughout history. Her inquiry also extends to our relationship to plants, our need to have them around us and how they have come to represent ‘nature’ in our own manufactured environments. Currently, Benjamim is engaged in a project that entails following a special diet. Her role here is not just that of maker since the researcher’s own experience is integral to the work. Thus she herself has become a research tool for investigating a seven-week-long colour diet based on fruits, vegetables and flowers, which is giving birth to a new interpretation and concept of eating. Benjamim is currently enrolled in a Master degree Art in Context in the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin (UDK) Supported by a grant from Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (Portugal). She holds a Bachelor in Sculpture and Degree in Visual Art from ESAD, Academy of Fine Arts in Caldas da Rainha, Portugal. Recent exhibition projects include Floristaurant, Riga International Biennial of Contemporary Art, Riga; Green edible instalation, Gallery Nord – Kunstverein Tiergarten, Berlin (2018); Endangered Plants, Haber Space in collaboration with the New York Academy of Medicine, New York (2017). Forthcoming exhibitions, Eau Florale, Roskilde Festival, Denmark; Plant cure, Humanity Gallery at LIU, in collaboration with Botanical Garden Brooklyn, New York (2019).
